Kitchen Fire Prevention: Stay With the Heat

Most kitchen fires do not begin with a dramatic mistake. They begin with a hot pan, a distraction, and a few minutes away. Prevention is less about fear and more about staying close enough to act before smoke becomes flame.

The essentials

Start here.

  1. Stay in the kitchen when frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling
  2. Turn the burner off if you leave
  3. Keep burnable items away from the stovetop
  4. Never put water on a grease fire

Stand by the pan

Stay in the kitchen when cooking with high heat. If you leave, turn the burner off. For baking, roasting, or simmering, remain at home, check food regularly, and use a timer.

Turn pot handles toward the back. Keep children and pets at least three feet from the cooking area. Wear close-fitting or rolled sleeves around burners.

Keep fuel away from heat

Move towels, packaging, paper, wooden utensils, curtains, and oven mitts away from the stovetop. Clean grease and crumbs from cooking equipment after it cools.

Keep a lid or baking sheet nearby. For a small pan fire, if it is safe, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not move the pan and do not add water. Leave the lid in place until everything is cool.

Know when the kitchen is no longer yours to manage

If flames are growing, smoke is spreading, or you do not have a clear exit, leave immediately, close the door behind you if possible, and call 911 outside. Use an extinguisher only when trained, the fire is small, and your escape route remains open.
